Asheville is drawing new residents from all over.

Here’s the geographic transplant diversity we kept hearing when we’re there.

People — who had previously retired or transplanted to the Carolinas, Georgia or Florida — decided to head to the mountains because the summers down south are too hot.

And then, folks up north from New York, New Jersey, and New England — who still want a winter but milder — are making the Asheville area their home, because it feels like home.

So, we warn you.  If you visit Asheville be prepared to stay.

Just the Blue Ridge Mountains alone are luring enough.

And yes, there have been films and TV shows shot here. But we don’t know why a Hallmark series has not taken up residence here.  We think it’s coming.

So, let’s give you our top 6 reasons for hitting Asheville – and its surrounding counties.

Natural Sceneries

Asheville is situated in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, which offers breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Parkway, great hiking trails, waterfalls, and vibrant foliage.  It is really a year-round place except for folks who don’t like winter snow.  There are so many folks who escape to Asheville just for the winter since the temps here are more moderate.

Arts and Culture

Asheville is a hub of arts and culture, with numerous galleries, music venues, museums, and festivals all year round.  The Biltmore – with plenty of history from the Gilded Age – is a must-see.  It will remind you of Newport, Rhode Island and its mansion gallery. But we also liken Asheville to Boston.  Like Beantown, Asheville is vibrant with a college vibe.  Because of its growing population, more traveling events are making Asheville a regular stop.

Food and Drink

Asheville has a thriving culinary scene with plenty of farm-to-table restaurants, craft breweries, and wine bars. As you will see, we hit quite a few for you.  And there are themed restaurants like Benne on Eagle which combines African and Appalachian cuisine.

Outdoor Wellness

Asheville provides a range of outdoor recreational activities such as rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. And this makes the Asheville region a healthy destination.  Besides the outdoor activities, Asheville is known for its alternative healing practices, yoga studios, and spas.

Community Spirit

The city of Asheville is diverse and welcoming, with various neighborhoods and a strong sense of community. We felt it while we stayed with friends who had transplanted there.  They felt at home and safe there.  Because Asheville is growing, the surrounding counties, like Buncombe County where we stayed, are attracting many new residents.

Educational Opportunities

Asheville is home to some excellent educational institutions, including the University of North Carolina at Asheville, which attracts students to the city.  It might make sense to move to Asheville to get your kids in-state tuition too.
