Most Americans don’t know where Vieques is.

“Vegas is in Nevada,” we’ve heard.

It’s pronounced Vee-ay-kezz

We’re also certain that they don’t know Vieques is part of the United States and US History.

Ferry Or Charter Flight from San Juan

This is a gorgeous, secluded island in the Caribbean, not far from Puerto Rico. In fact, you will have to fly to Puerto Rico, then take a ferry or a short charter flight.

We chose the small engine flight, as you will see in the segment below.

We were fortunate enough to tag along with some friends who had set up the entire trip.

A good friend Raleigh Rick Meadows is a genius at creating group excursions.

Eight of us shared a beautiful home for a week around New Year’s including a gourmet chef on New Year’s Eve.

We also hit numerous restaurants, as you will see.

Vieques Means Unwind

We would suggest you discover this off-the-beaten path island — especially if you want to de-program your working or big city mind.

Let’s give you the 6 top reasons for a Vieques vacation.

  • Beautiful Beaches: Vieques is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and stunning views. Some of the most popular beaches include Playa Caracas, Sun Bay Beach, and Red Beach.
  • Bioluminescent Bay: Vieques is home to one of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world, known as Mosquito Bay. Visitors can experience the magical glow of the bioluminescence by taking a night kayaking tour.
  • Natural Beauty: Vieques is a nature lover’s paradise, with lush tropical forests, rolling hills, and a variety of wildlife. Visitors can explore the island’s natural beauty by hiking, horseback riding, or taking a guided tour. Plus, horses seem to rule the island landscape.
  • Culture and History: Vieques has a rich history and culture, with a mix of Spanish and African influences. Visitors can learn about the island’s history by visiting the Vieques Historical Archives and Museum or taking a guided tour of the island. Many of the restaurants show off the Spanish and African influenced cuisine too.
  • Relaxation and Seclusion: Vieques is a relatively undeveloped island, which means that it offers visitors a peaceful and secluded vacation experience. Visitors can relax on the beach, enjoy the island’s natural beauty, and soak up the laid-back island vibe.
  • For Americans, because you are still in the United States, your cell phone and your money work easy compared to other Caribbean, non-American spots.

Vieques and US History

Vieques also had a big role in US defense during the Cold War.  And like many vets, part of Vieques share some aftermath.

The US Navy used the island as a bombing range and training ground for several decades. The navy conducted several military exercises on the island, which helped to prepare the US military for potential conflicts.

However, the environmental impact of the military training on the island had severe consequences. The bombing range caused significant damage to the ecosystem of Vieques, which resulted in protests from the residents of the island. The protests eventually led to the Navy’s departure from the island in 2003.

Today, a significant portion of Vieques remains off-limits to the public due to the presence of unexploded ordnance and other hazards left behind by the military. The area is fenced off and patrolled by US Fish and Wildlife Service to prevent unauthorized access and ensure public safety.

Avoiding these areas is highly recommended.

Still, to make sure, we checked and there are no health advisories telling you not to travel to Vieques.

So, we rate Vieques a great vacation getaway that is natural and secluded with plenty of relaxation, adventure, and cultural enrichment.
