We love a good stay and play golf vacation.

We found another memorable one. This one is at Wedgefield Country Club in Georgetown, South Carolina.

And, as always on Undercover Jetsetter, we found great golf, great food, a hidden jetsetter tip, and a ghost… allegedly.

Wedgefield’s Director of Golf Champ Detamore tells us that Wedgefield can compete with any course along the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand. We agree.

Bring You A-Game

The course is tough for two reasons. First, it is relatively long. Second, it has a lot of water. And these hazards are strategically placed.

To make things more interesting, the Wedgefield signature hole, the 17th, a par-5, is short, tight, and very picturesque.

As you will see, John played it conservatively, hitting his second shot from the rough, back into the fairway, allowing a chance at birdie that he just missed.

Tell us how you did when you play Wedgefield.

Walk and Fast Play

Wedgefield is newly renovated. So the greens and fairways are in great shape.

Here’s what also makes Wedgefield even more unique for resort golfing.

First, you can walk the course. They offer easy-to-use pull carts.

Second, they emphasize speed of play. They are going to restrict their private memberships, so that the average 18-hole round will be under four hours.

We know a lot of you were thinking right now: how many times have I had to wait on a resort course for people who don’t know how to play quickly. Wedgefield is trying to change that.

They’re also changing your eating habits at the turn when you its nostalgic pub.

Pub Pizza?

The Brick House Pub is from the 19th century. They have plenty of libations, but here’s another unique feature. They offer pizza. Not just any pizza. This is pizza that comes from… Wait for it… New Jersey.

We know what you’re saying. New Jersey pizza in South Carolina?

The new owners insisted on this. And when you try it, you will thank them. It is excellent. And as Champ tells us, it’s something a little different than the typical bar food you get at most golf course pubs.

Stay, Play, Get Hitched

Like the Brick House Pub, there are other renovations that make Wedgefield an ideal place to stay. They have a number of small cabins that are quaint and fun — perfect for a couple. They also have some renovated apartments that allow people to entertain other golf partners.

But the big renovation is the main building, which will soon be a meeting and wedding venue.

With all the video you will see in our segment, you can easily imagine the photos and memories for a newly married couple in this classic Southern background.

No doubt, you can come to Wedgefield, and literally never leave the Plantation.

Hit Georgetown

However, we recommend a short trek, maybe an evening, to downtown Georgetown.

Georgetown is also rich in history and culture. It has a charming downtown area with historic homes, museums, art galleries, and theaters.

Plus, there are plenty of places to eat and drink.

In this segment, we ate at the River Room. It was spectacular. We highly recommend two entrees: the ribeye steak; and the seared Ahi tuna.

Dining Tip You Can Only Get Here

Now you will notice in our segment we gave you a jetsetter tip to get you seated quickly. Remember, most of the restaurants in this tourist area do not take reservations. It is first come first serve, but we show you how to get around it.

Wedgefield, along with Georgetown, is oozing with history.

During the early part of the 19th century, Wedgefield was a rice plantation thanks to the mixture of fresh and salt water tributaries and the cheap but knowledgeable labor from slaves. That all changed after the Civil War.

Earlier, during the American Revolution, Wedgefield played a big role.

American hero Francis Marion commanded these parts to stave off the British.

He was known as the Swamp Fox because he always eluded the Red Coats.

One episode, due to Marion’s cunning, led to centuries of ghostly experiences — that we explore in our segment.

The Brits captured and imprisoned five Americans on the Wedgefield Plantation.

Marion had a number of female spies who alerted him when the prisoners were not heavily guarded.

Marion deployed a group of American patriots who freed the prisoners.

Wedgefield’s Headless Ghost

However, during the surprise attack, an American soldier with a sword chopped off the head of the lone British sentry.

Years and centuries later, visitors claimed to have seen that headless ghost walking the property at night.

We thought maybe we saw him also. Did we? You’ll have to see for yourself.

But Champ Detamore, our tour guide, hopes that ghost is no longer there, because he apparently resides in the apartment for Champ and his wife stay.

Tell us what you think of the segment. And let us know if you indulge in Wedgefield.
