Arnie’s Revenge

You will either be angry or howling with laughter.

That’s the usual reactions when you have finally holed out on the Par-5 9th hole at Rivers Edge Golf Club.

That is, if you get a chance to hole out.

Scary Hole

It has been called the scariest hole on the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand and the Myrtle Beach Golf Trail.  It is almost as legendary as the great pro who designed it.

From the tips it plays 570 yards; from the whites about 510; the women’s tees 429 yards. Those numbers aren’t too daunting, until you play it.

The marshy waters of the Shallotte River must be crossed twice. The landing areas are narrow and surrounded by marsh or forest.

The green is a long, narrow sliver with confusing crosswinds. Holding the green from 100 yards is a task for even the best short-game player.

I am fortunate to play here consistently.  As you know, I am a single digit handicap.  In the 6 years of playing here, my average score is a double bogey 7. I have only two pars. I reached the green in two once during a scramble event in which my team birdied.

Also, if you do birdie or eagle Arnie’s Revenge, the course will memorialize you.

Gallery of Spectators

Plus, the way Rivers Edge is set up there will be a gallery every time to watch how you fare.  The clubhouse is surrounded by a deck looking down on Arnie’s Revenge and the nearby 18th finishing hole.

Now, you could find yourself ending a round on Arnie’s Revenge for two reasons.

  • The first, you started on the 10th hole making Arnie’s Revenge your last hole of the day.
  • The second, you just want to give up because of the massive score you just tallied.

We hope it is the first reason.

Why?

Rivers Edge: Arnold Palmer Design

Because Rivers Edge Golf Club is a renowned golf course located in Shallotte, North Carolina. And that is right in between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC — about 30-to-40 minutes either way.

The course was designed by the legendary golf course architect, Arnold Palmer, and it opened in 1999.

Arnie wanted to create a world-class golf course in the area.  And when he saw the land, he called it “the best site for a golf course I’ve ever seen.”

Palmer’s design of the course is known for its challenging layout, with several other holes – not just the 9th hole, that require precision shots and strategic thinking.

This is why you will always come back and play here. One round does not do justice to the course or to your game.  You need to play Rivers Edge a number of times.

You will come back here again and again to tame Arnie’s Revenge.
